It took me an embarrassingly long time to come up with that title. It’s true, though- I am the Walter Mitty of fashion, sitting in my pyjamas dreaming of successfully wearing the moment’s most daring trends. I’ve been meaning to buy a floppy hat for years now. Recently I’ve gotten better at realising these dreams though. This blog has certainly helped- maxi skirts and socks with sandals and all sorts have wormed their way into my everyday wear in this last month.

Now one thing I’ve always wanted to be able to pull off is the midi-length skirt or dress. I think they’re beautiful, no matter the print or material they always look so sophisticated. However, this dream of mine has never been indulged for several reasons:

1) I’m not a tall person. I’m always worried that in a midi dress I’ll look a bit like a very small person in a mini dress. Well, when I say always worried, it doesn’t keep me up at night or anything but it’s enough to put me off, or it was, until my ever-growing collection of heels and flatforms gave me the stilts I needed

2) Where would I wear such a thing? I’m young enough to still feel the need to dress like I could nip around school in anything I wear, and midis just do not qualify. I’m only slowly realising that actually I don’t need to judge every item of clothing I have based on it’s suitability for own-clothes day. Now I have the wonderful freedom to wear midis every day if I so choose!

3) Isn’t that what older people wear?? I feel like it’s only recently that the midi-length has come back into fashion as a young person’s garment. Before it seemed less like a conscious trend and more like a length that just sort of trailed off after the knee. Because of this, a prerequisite of everything I buy is that it falls above the knee, that boundary that separates the generations by skirt length. But this just isn’t the case anymore! Midis are everywhere and the yoof of today have fully embraced them. So it’s high time I did too.

Now that these vital concerns have been solved, I’m pleased to say I broke free from my Walter Mitty self and bought a midi dress (and I liked that one so much I bought another, but that’s a story for another time..)

Yes, of course it had to be patterned! Bodycon isn’t a style I’d usually go for but I couldn’t resist the jewel print. The dress is from Red or Dead via Bank fashion and the shoes are my ol’ pals from Primark. I wanted to make sure I didn’t look overdressed so I added a casual jacket.

The denim jacket (charity shop £4 bargain) is laid back enough to make the dress good for everyday wear, but I’d be happy to wear it to a formal event too. Here’s a close-up of the pattern that made me swoon (I’m a bit of a gemophile so it really speaks to me):

I think I may have really found my groove with the midi. my next midi dress purchase will be arriving at the blog soon so watch out for another fabulous pattern!

My next step is the midi skirt! If you’re wondering where you can dip your toe in the water with a midi skirt, or perhaps you’re looking for one to add to your blossoming collection, Topshop is my pick.

This skirt is currently in the Topshop sale for £20 (click on the image to buy), and it’s not too long either, so it’s the perfect training midi. I love the grid print and the slight poof it has. It’s the next thing on my wish list, that’s for sure. Why not take the plunge with me?
